In April 2023, police and city workers moved to demolish Wood Street Commons, Oakland’s largest homeless encampment, evicting people living beneath the highway for decades. The documentary “Wood Street,” directed by Caron Creighton, follows residents through the year before demolition, showing humor, resilience, and efforts to attend City Hall meetings and work with lawyers to prevent eviction. The film debuts in the Bay Area at SF DocFest on May 31 at the Roxie Theater, with an additional Oakland screening at the New Parkway Theater in July. Residents describe making the best of conditions without running water, including traveling to a park for water and boiling it, and finding support through community.
