BeChinatown, founded by Lily Lo, is an initiative aimed at uplifting San Francisco's Chinatown by supporting local businesses and assisting immigrants in their adaptation to life in the U.S. The nonprofit collaborates with community members to enhance the area’s appeal, including initiatives such as illuminating the district with lanterns for safety and aesthetics. Additionally, the organization engages younger generations through activities like Night Markets and provides resources for small businesses in need of financial support. Lo's commitment to the neighborhood reflects her personal immigrant experience, further motivating her mission to empower local entrepreneurs.
We noticed that Chinatown is quite dark, and seniors don't feel safe, especially with rising crime. So we came up with the idea of lanterns to not only to beautify the area but also to enhance safety.
When I first moved here in 1974, my family didn't speak any English. My parents had their own business and worked hard to support eight of us in a small house.
Chinatown is generally home to an older population and can feel quiet at times. To bring in more young people, we launched the Night Markets.
