Cold Case Sleuths Use DNA and Geneology to ID 1981 San Jose Murder Victim
Briefly

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Cold Case Unit has identified Vivian Moss, a woman murdered in 1981, with her dismembered torso found in San Jose. DNA evidence and genealogical research led to this identification, supported by the testimonies of her family, including her granddaughter. The DA’s office hopes this renewed focus will uncover Moss’s killer, urging the public to provide any new information about her case. The investigation highlights ongoing efforts to resolve cold cases and bring justice to victims and their families.
Vivian Moss was her name. My Office knows it. I know it. Her family knows it. And now our community knows it. One day soon, I hope we will know the depraved person who took her life and left her in a field, hoping she would be forgotten. If her murderer is still alive, they will know that we don't forget in Santa Clara County.
Last year, Parabon hypothesized that the victim was likely Moss, who was born in Arkansas in 1927. In 2024, DA investigators located and interviewed Vivian Moss' granddaughter.
