Berkeley green-lights its tallest building yet at Shattuck and University
Briefly

The Berkeley Zoning and Adjustments Board has greenlit a 28-story, 599-unit apartment building, making it the tallest ever proposed in the city. The building, located at Shattuck and University avenues, aims to offer 58 units for very-low-income tenants. Although the project is moving forward, the existing McDonald's location poses a challenge, as the chain plans to remain until 2031 after declining buyout offers. This development marks a significant milestone amidst a slowdown in construction due to rising interest rates.
At 312 feet, it would rise above the Campanile and other downtown high-rises...including a 285-foot-tall tower and a 268-foot-tall building approved recently.
The project at University and Shattuck has been in the works since June 2022, with a team proposing to knock down the existing buildings including a McDonald's.
