Bay Area county votes to remove first female sheriff from office
Briefly

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to remove Sheriff Christina Corpus for charter violations, the first implementation of Measure A since its approval in 2025. The removal, prompted by anonymous misconduct complaints and a thorough investigation revealing extensive evidence, is a landmark action against an elected official in the county. Sheriff Corpus, the first woman and Latina to hold the position, is permitted to appeal the decision. Board President David Canepa expressed regret over these developments, emphasizing the financial costs to taxpayers.
This is a very regrettable chapter in the history of San Mateo County, and the taxpayers are paying a very heavy price.
The procedural notice to remove Corpus found three specific grounds for removal under the county charter: violation of the law related to the performance of sheriff's duties, flagrant and repeated neglect of those duties, and obstruction of an investigation into the sheriff's conduct.
