YouTube, WhatsApp blocked in Russia
"If a user tries to access the site directly without a VPN (Virtual Private Network), their router can no longer assign the address to its IP address. This means that You Tube is no longer accessible in Russia. The WhatsApp domain has also disappeared from Roskomnadzor's servers. The Russian government has also launched a campaign against the messenger app Telegram, leading analysts to say Roskomnadzor is cracking down on platforms beyond its control."

Roskomnadzor removed youtube.com and WhatsApp from its DNS servers, preventing routers from assigning their addresses to IPs and blocking direct access without a VPN. The regulator's actions coincide with a campaign against Telegram and indicate enforcement extending beyond previously controlled platforms. DNS functions like the internet's phone book; IP addresses are numbers assigned to devices for identification. A VPN creates an encrypted connection between a device and a server, allowing users to bypass geo-blocking and surf anonymously. In an anonymous DW survey, 46% used YouTube via a VPN, 24% reported problems despite a VPN, and 3% experienced disruptions without one. The DNS servers are operated as a National Domain Name System introduced with the Sovereign Internet Law.
