Maramureseanu, a shop in Longbridge Road, was found to have illegal substances during an inspection, including amoxicillin and illicit tobacco. The Home Office reported that unlicensed alcohol was also present. Following the raid on May 20, 2024, the shop was fined £80,000 and two employees were arrested. The owner, Bogdan Bota, acknowledged neglect in verifying workers' legal statuses. A licensing review, prompted by historical breaches, revealed ongoing issues of clandestine sales, driving concerns for immigration and trading authorities regarding the shop's practices.
There is strong evidence of illegal working committed in relation to the premises, and the quantity of illicit tobacco, alcohol and medication products repeatedly found is concerning.
The breaches at the shop were 'severe' and included selling illicit tobacco to an undercover officer, leading to the seizure of 1,500 units shortly after the immigration raid.
