Renovation has begun on the Canning Town Old Library to convert it into Newham's new heritage centre, with the public invited to suggest names for the venue. The library has been closed since 2017, and after securing £6.2 million in funding through a levelling-up initiative, the council appointed architects to modernize the building. Originally constructed in the early 1890s, it was electrified early on, and it has a significant history that the new centre will aim to celebrate. The centre is expected to reopen in autumn 2026.
The council is asking the public to suggest a name for the new heritage centre, which is being converted from the old Canning Town Library.
The building, which has been vacant since 2017, is undergoing renovation with £6.2 million of funding secured from a levelling-up bid.
