Women lead in over half of Holywood movies for first time DW 02/12/2025
Briefly

In 2024, for the first time, more than half (54%) of the top 100 grossing movies featured female leads or co-leads, according to the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. This notable increase from 30% in 2023 and 20% in 2007 illustrates the progress toward gender equality in film. Significant titles include Disney's 'Inside Out 2' and 'Wicked'. However, disparities remain among studios, with Universal Studios exhibiting a higher percentage of female-led films compared to Sony Pictures. While female leadership in films has proven economically favorable, representation of minorities remains an ongoing challenge.
This is the first time we can say that gender equality has been reached in top-grossing films, showcasing a significant increase in female protagonists in 2024.
In 2024, three of the top five films had a girl or woman in a leading role, representing a new pinnacle for gender representation in cinema.
