Sheriff's deputies confirmed that a woman had been feeding raccoons for decades, causing their population to explode to between 50 and 100, leading to aggressive behavior.
Kevin McCarty from the sheriff's office explained that the raccoons began behaving aggressively, expecting food and surrounding her home and vehicle, turning the situation into a nuisance.
While it's illegal to feed large carnivores according to state law, feeding wildlife like raccoons is not forbidden, though it is strongly discouraged by wildlife agencies.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife warned that feeding wildlife can attract predators and cause diseases, emphasizing the risks involved in such behavior.
