Why Puerto Rico's statehood referendum was a ploy for Democrat seats in Congress

House Democrats passed a controversial Puerto Rico Status Act, leaving out the option to remain a commonwealth, leading to a referendum that many on the island viewed as illegitimate.

Pablo José Hernández Rivera, Puerto Rico's Resident Commissioner, stated he could not accept the referendum's results since it failed to include maintaining the Commonwealth as an option.

The drive for statehood appears to be politically motivated, as Democrats anticipate gaining seats in Congress and the Electoral College if Puerto Rico becomes a state.
