Bulgaria will adopt the euro on January 1, 2026, replacing the lev and becoming the eurozone's 21st member. The 6.7 million–person country has been an EU member since January 1, 2007, and joined the Schengen Area in March 2024. Six EU countries still use national currencies: the Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden. The euro is the EU's unified currency, used by about 350 million people and managed by the European Central Bank and the Eurosystem. Euro banknotes are uniform across member states while coins have national designs. Most EU countries must adopt the euro after meeting economic criteria and spending at least two years in ERM II.
