Where to enjoy Handel's 'Messiah' this holiday season
Briefly

Every year around December, the same set of cultural rituals get repeated, depending on your performing art of choice. For ballet fans it's 'The Nutcracker' that marks the holiday season, for theatergoers it's 'A Christmas Carol,' and for classical music lovers, nothing says Christmas like performances of 'Messiah.'
An oratorio is a piece for vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra, usually on religious or biblical themes. The music is a combination of arias, choruses and recitatives.
Where can I hear the piece performed? You can usually choose among a range of performing organizations and styles. The San Francisco Symphony does 'Messiah' every year, with a guest conductor, guest soloists and the terrific Symphony Chorus.
But one of the most deeply satisfying ways to experience 'Messiah' is to sing it yourself.
