On January 31, 2025, a tragic midair collision between a commercial passenger plane and an Army helicopter resulted in the loss of all 67 lives on board. The incident marks the deadliest aviation event involving a U.S. commercial carrier in over two decades. The commercial flight, operated by PSA Airlines, was on its way from Wichita to Washington, D.C., when it collided with a military helicopter conducting training missions. Recovery efforts are ongoing, with many victims already identified by their families, including Army personnel aboard the helicopter, whose identities are pending official notification.
The PSA Airline-operated commercial plane, which had 60 passengers and 4 crew members, had been headed for the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in Virginia from Wichita, Kans. when it collided with the helicopter.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a press conference Thursday said the soldiers were a captain, a staff sergeant, and a chief warrant officer conducting a routine annual retraining of night flights.
