More than 40 people died and dozens suffered serious burns after a fire tore through Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana during New Year's Eve celebrations. The blaze began around 1.30am as revellers marked the new year and spread rapidly across the low-ceilinged basement venue. Witnesses reported a bartender lifting a waitress holding champagne bottles with sparklers near the ceiling, and officials warned the fire may have released combustible gases that ignited violently. The basement dancefloor attracted a young crowd without an entrance fee, and many victims are teenagers. Police arrived within minutes but the bar was already engulfed, and a crowd surge impeded escape. The municipality had banned fireworks due to dry conditions.
