"Atlantic Canada is under widespread weather warnings for snow, freezing rain and strong winds as a winter storm moves across the region. In Newfoundland, up to 40cm of snow fell on Sunday, along with wind gusts of about 74mph, creating blizzard-like conditions. The storm began late on Sunday and is forecast to persist until Tuesday morning. Freezing rain warnings are in place across Nova Scotia, including Annapolis and Kings counties,"
"In Australia, Tropical Cyclone Koji formed in the Coral Sea off Queensland's north coast over the weekend, making landfall as a category 1 system between Ayr and Bowen on Sunday. The storm brought heavy rain and damaging winds, with gusts above 70mph recorded at Hamilton Island. Koji has since weakened to a tropical low but continues to produce severe weather, including winds of up to 59mph and widespread heavy rain."
"The severe weather is driven by two low-pressure systems merging over the region. Freezing rain occurs when precipitation falls as rain through a layer of warm air aloft before passing into a shallow layer of sub-zero air near the ground. The raindrops become supercooled as they pass through this layer, and freeze instantly on contact with roads, trees and power lines, rapidly forming a smooth, often invisible layer of ice."
Atlantic Canada faces widespread warnings for snow, freezing rain and strong winds as a winter storm moves across the region. Newfoundland recorded up to 40 cm of snow and wind gusts near 74 mph, producing blizzard-like conditions while warnings persist until Tuesday morning. Freezing rain warnings cover parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, with localized totals up to 25 cm possible and power outages, fallen branches and hazardous roads expected. The severe weather results from two merging low-pressure systems. In Queensland, Tropical Cyclone Koji made landfall as a Category 1 system, brought heavy rain and damaging winds, caused flooding, road closures and power outages affecting roughly 22,000 people, and has weakened to a tropical low while continuing to produce heavy rain and flash-flood risk.
