The analysis from The Grocer magazine found that 37 out of 117 butters at the major UK supermarkets had risen in price in the five weeks up to November 13. This represents a significant increase considering the supply constraints in the market, particularly for brands like Trewithen and Country Life, which noted 20% and 13% price hikes respectively. Such increases reflect not just consumer trends but also the challenges faced by suppliers amid adverse weather conditions affecting milk and cream production.
British Retail Consortium chief executive Helen Dickinson commented that while households might appreciate the decline in overall food inflation, this positive trend remains precarious. It is vulnerable to geopolitical tensions and impacts of climate change on food supplies. Retail is facing a unique struggling position, paying more taxes relative to other sectors and depending heavily on government decisions, which could affect pricing structures and overall supply levels.
