Warning of major traffic disruption in Dublin as taxi drivers stage further protest over Uber pricing
"Gardaí have advised the public to expect disruption in Dublin city due to the protest. Delays are expected in the vicinity of Dublin Airport and Conyngham Road to Merrion Street via the Northside city centre quay. Delays are also expected from UCD to Merrion Square via the N11, and the Estuary Road, Swords and Northwood, and Santry. Motorists have been encouraged to avoid these routes where possible and allow extra time for any commute in the surrounding areas."
"Dublin Airport has said traffic is expected to be heavier than usual on roads around the airport due to the protest, leading to significant disruption and delays for passengers travelling to and from the airport. Those travelling to the airport have been advised to allow additional time and consider alternate routes, including accessing the airport via Junction 4 Ballymun on the M50."
"Uber recently introduced a fixed-price model, guaranteeing a maximum fare upfront instead of an estimated price range that can rise with traffic or route changes. The company has said the measure reduces "meter anxiety" and allows passengers to pay a lower amount if the fare comes in under the fixed price. Representatives of taxi drivers say the new model leads to drivers earning less during heavy traffic."
Taxi drivers staged a second protest at 4.30pm on Wednesday against Uber's new fixed-price model. Gardaí warned of disruption in Dublin city and delays around Dublin Airport, Conyngham Road to Merrion Street via the Northside quay. Delays were also expected from UCD to Merrion Square via the N11 and on Estuary Road, Swords, Northwood and Santry. Motorists were encouraged to avoid affected routes and allow extra time for commutes, and a similar protest ran at 4.30pm in Galway. Dublin Airport warned of heavier traffic, urged travellers to allow extra time and consider Junction 4 Ballymun on the M50, and said airport police were coordinating with gardaí and transport authorities.
