The Brooklyn Botanic Garden showcased the rare Amorphophallus gigas plant for the first time since its arrival in 2018, attracting visitors eager to experience its infamous rotten smell. Known for its massive size and carrion-like scent, this plant can take years to bloom again. Gardener Chris Sprindis noted its blooming is exceptionally rare, citing that the event would not occur again for several years. Similarly, a corpse flower bloomed in Sydney after a 15-year hiatus, demonstrating the global fascination with these unique plants and their unusual scents.
"It smells like feet, cheese and rotten meat. It just smelled like the worst possible combination of smells," Elijah Blades said. "That was disgusting."
"So this is the first time it's happened here," Sprindis said. "It's not going to happen next year. It's going to be several years before it happens again."
