A young Antarctic minke whale delighted ferry passengers near Sydney, following the vessel as it approached Bundeena wharf. The sighting, described as very rare by local ferry manager Christine Hack, involved staff capturing footage of the whale swimming alongside the ferry. Wildlife scientist Dr. Vanessa Pirotta confirmed it was unusual for this species, primarily found in Antarctic waters, to be spotted in Sydney, where dwarf minke whales are more common, especially during migration months.
The whale began following the vessel as it approached Bundeena wharf at about 10am on Monday. This sighting was very rare, according to the ferry manager.
Wildlife scientist Dr. Vanessa Pirotta noted it's unusual to spot an Antarctic minke whale in Sydney's warm waters, as they are mainly found in icy Antarctic regions.
