Marissa Manzanares, the interim president of a Brooklyn parent group, resigned in a dramatic letter in which she accused city Department of Education officials of fascism. Manzanares, a creative arts therapist, expressed regret for leaving her supportive community of parents and staff while addressing concerns about censorship and free speech within the group's meetings. Her resignation follows turbulent leadership marked by accusations of blocking diverse viewpoints. As campaigning for new council seats begins, parents are eager for more inclusive, open meetings moving forward.
"Dear FACE and DOE Fascist Administrators," began her message to city Department of Education and its office of Family and Community Engagement. Manzanares criticized city officials in her resignation.
"To the rest of you fascist and corrupt ... politicians and company men, good luck when they come for you," Manzanares' message to the DOE continued.
