Turkey: Erdogan rival Imamoglu stands trial DW 09/12/2025
"What exactly is my crime here? What fraud?"
"This is the level of absurdity in the indictment: next they might even claim the TRNC does not exist just so my degree can be revoked,"
"President Imamoglu."
"unlawful."
Ekrem Imamoglu, Istanbul's jailed mayor and prominent opposition leader, faced a trial on charges of repeated falsification of official documents regarding his university degree. He is held in a prison 80 kilometres from Istanbul and was greeted by supporters who called him "President Imamoglu" as he entered the courtroom. Imamoglu said he was accepted at age 18 by a university in Northern Cyprus and later transferred that degree to Istanbul University in line with YOK regulations, calling the indictment absurd. The prosecution seeks up to eight years and nine months in jail plus a ban on political activities; the next hearing is set for October 20.
