Tufts University plans to build a new residence hall on Boston Avenue, but its 10-story height has drawn significant opposition from Medford residents. Over 50 locals signed a letter to the Community Development Board (CDB), expressing concerns about light pollution, traffic, and safety. The proposal has been reconsidered multiple times, prompting residents to question both the building's height and its compliance with zoning laws, particularly regarding the Dover Amendment. While they don't oppose the project overall, residents want to limit the height to seven stories, as initially proposed.
The addition of three floors to the building design is directly connected and consequential to the introduction of a for-profit development partner, who will continue to manage and profit from this project for years to come, while the neighborhood bears the impact of the oversized building.
Neighbors in the Medford Hillsides area say they take issue with the 10-story height, citing potential light and sound pollution and traffic concerns.
