Following the inauguration of a Republican president who issued broad pardons, many supporters of the January 6 Capitol attack were released from prison, eliciting a mixture of celebration among supporters and condemnation from lawmakers. Stewart Rhodes, leader of the Oath Keepers, was among those commuted. Outside the detention facility in Washington, a lively crowd gathered, showcasing enthusiasm for the pardons, contrasting starkly with the outrage from Congress members who faced danger during the riot.
Some of those present were Trump supporters, in town for the inauguration, but Scott Tapely, 56, from Indiana said his tickets were rendered useless when the events were moved indoors so instead he came down to the jail to show his support.
