The Justice Department's interim leadership has issued a memo directing U.S. attorneys to investigate state and local officials who do not comply with the Trump administration's strict immigration policies. It emphasizes the Supremacy Clause, indicating that officials could face legal consequences for noncompliance. As potential raids in cities with high undocumented immigrant populations loom, the memo signals an aggressive approach toward enforcing federal immigration laws, highlighting the department's commitment to Trump's agenda.
Federal law prohibits state and local actors from resisting, obstructing, and otherwise failing to comply with lawful immigration-related commands," wrote Emil Bove III.
U.S. attorneys' offices and officials from various branches of the department's Washington headquarters "shall investigate instances involving any such misconduct for potential prosecution," Bove wrote.
