Sen. Susan Collins expressed concern over the omission of critical information from Pete Hegseth's FBI background check, who is nominated as Secretary of Defense. She highlighted allegations from Hegseth's former sister-in-law regarding physical intimidation and excessive drinking that were not included in the investigation report. Both Collins and Sen. Jack Reed emphasized the necessity for thorough vetting given the serious nature of the accusations against Hegseth, which include sexual assault and alcohol abuse. The discussion stems from a growing scrutiny around the nomination process and the integrity of background investigations for high-level officials.
I've heard from others that pertinent information has not been included, and that is troubling. When you're making a decision about a nominee, you want to have as complete a picture as possible.
As I have said for months, the reports of Mr. Hegseth's history of alleged sexual assault, alcohol abuse, and public misconduct necessitate an exhaustive background investigation.
I pressed him on both his position on military issues as well as the allegations against him. I don't think there was anything that we did not cover.
This sworn affidavit confirms that fact, which is why we need to ensure all allegations are thoroughly investigated.
