U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is reassessing rules that permitted reduced air traffic control personnel at Reagan National Airport following a tragic helicopter-plane collision that resulted in 67 fatalities. Duffy criticized military helicopter operations in busy airspace, especially questioning the necessity of helicopter usage by generals. He emphasized the importance of scrutiny over safety protocols, particularly with helicopter flights operating at unsafe altitudes and times. As a result of the incident, the FAA has restricted helicopter operations around Reagan National Airport until late February 2024 for safety reasons.
If we have generals who are flying in helicopters for convenience through this airspace, that's not acceptable. Get a damn Suburban and drive.
We have to take a real look at the safety around this airspace ... We can fly training missions at a different time of night.
