John Irving (31), Francis Harman (58) and John Clarke (37) pleaded guilty to manslaughter after violently attacking 75-year-old Tom Niland in his rural Sligo home. The men punched and kicked the pensioner to the head, rendering him unconscious, tied his shoelaces to prevent him from raising the alarm, ransacked the house and stole his wallet and €800. The attack occurred on January 18, 2022. Niland suffered blunt force head trauma and died in September 2023 from complications related to those injuries, approximately twenty months after the assault. The three defendants received a combined sentence of 43 years.
