Three miners are feared dead inside a flooded coal mine in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, with rescue efforts ongoing to save nine others still trapped. Authorities confirmed that twelve miners were trapped when water flooded the mine, with rescue teams deploying divers, helicopters, and engineers. Local police mentioned that the flooding was caused by the miners hitting an internal water channel, which led to the rapid inundation of the site.
Photographs shared by the Indian military depicted rescue workers equipped with ropes and cranes at the site of the disaster, struggling to reach those trapped 300 feet below ground. Assam's Mines Minister emphasized their mobilization of additional resources to conduct the rescue operations. The region's mining practices are particularly risky, with workers often extracting coal in substandard conditions in small mines commonly referred to as rat hole mines.
