Mike Furgal has devoted 25 years to Waterville Valley as a ski instructor and ski patrol member. His deep roots in the area span generations, with his family history intertwined with the mountain. Waterville Valley is celebrated not just for its skiing but for its unique structure as a family-friendly, self-contained destination. With 62 trails that all return to a single base, the area fosters a sense of togetherness. Furgal highlights the charm of the alpine village, describing the town as a "cul-de-sac" that feels magical, making it an intentional destination rather than a passing stop.
Being a ski instructor, I kind of figured I could go to Loon, I could go to Killington, there's a lot of places I could go, but what makes Waterville unique is the valley.
You can't get lost. We're a single-base area. Everything comes down to a single place.
We call it the biggest cul-de-sac in the world. You drive 11 miles into the national forest, and you don't see anything.
And I think that makes it magical. You don't get here by accident.
