This Isn't the First Plane Crash to Devastate U.S. Figure Skating
Briefly

American Airlines Flight 5342 tragically collided with a U.S. Army helicopter, leading to a crash in the Potomac River, with no survivors believed to be on board. Among the victims were numerous promising young figure skaters returning from a competition, along with their families and coaches. Many of these athletes were poised to represent the next generation of figure skating talent, participating in a development program aimed at advancing their careers. This heartbreaking incident has extinguished the futures of many individuals who showed great promise in their sport, with devastating impacts on their families and the figure skating community.
To have their careers cut short at this moment in their development is especially devastating.
These were not the skaters one would be seeing at next year's Olympics in Milan; these were likely the skaters one would be seeing in 2030 and beyond.
One such example of a rapidly progressing skater lost on this flight is Spencer Lane, who had recently won gold in Intermediate Men at the U.S. Eastern Sectional championships.
