Following the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, many Afghan refugees with ties to U.S. interests are stuck in Pakistan. After Trump's executive order suspending the Refugee Admissions Program, over 500 flights for vetted Afghan refugees were canceled. As Pakistan demands Afghan residents to leave cities by March 31, around 15,000 refugees are caught in a dire situation, unable to progress the paperwork needed to reach safety in the U.S., with deadlines looming and increasing threats of repatriation.
One refugee agency told TIME that more than 500 flights for more than 1,000 already vetted refugees from the region were canceled.
According to according to Shawn VanDiver, founder of #AfghanEvac, 15,000 or so Pakistan-based Afghan refugees were approved as ready to travel.
