"Thanksgiving is the busiest holiday for travel, and this year we're expecting to set new records across the board, from driving to flying and cruising," Stacey Barber, the vice president of AAA Travel, said. She emphasized that travel has become a vital way for Americans to reconnect with loved ones after the pandemic, reflecting a strong post-pandemic travel demand across various modes of transport.
Despite the surge in travel demand, AAA reported that travelers are facing a three percent increase in domestic flight prices this year compared to last year. This rise comes even as international flight prices have decreased by five percent, leading to a significant 23 percent increase in international travel bookings compared to the previous year. Travelers seem willing to pay more domestically while capitalizing on cheaper international fare options.
United Airlines forecasts its busiest travel period ever this Thanksgiving, expecting more than 6.2 million passengers to fly between Nov. 21 and Dec. 3, translating to nearly 480,000 travelers a day. The company anticipates that the Saturday and Sunday following Thanksgiving will see the highest volume of passengers, with a notable 20 percent increase in travel bookings for the days after Turkey Day over last year.
