The unlicensed OneDrive fun ends this month
Briefly

Microsoft has announced that beginning January 27, 2025, any OneDrive accounts that are unlicensed for more than 93 days will be transferred to the recycle bin or archived, marking a significant policy change aimed at addressing security and compliance risks.
The transition signifies the end of a loophole for organizations retaining data without payment, as unlicensed accounts will pose risks and confusion, compelling users to act before the deadline.
Any data remaining in unlicensed accounts will face a total of 186 days before being permanently deleted. The new policy necessitates organizations to be proactive regarding their data retention strategies.
If an organization with many unlicensed accounts wishes to restore any specific account, they will incur costs—$0.60/GB for reactivation and an ongoing monthly fee of $0.05/GB, which can form a substantial financial obligation.
