The installations are part of the larger Indigenize SF project, an initiative led by the American Indian Cultural District that hopes to shed light on issues faced by Native American populations.
Sharaya Souza, AICD co-founder and executive director, refers to the Indigenize SF project as one of "place-making and place-keeping," to bring visibility to American Indians and celebrate their culture.
The art pieces installed as part of Indigenize SF meld intertribal issues - displacement, environmental harm and violence faced by Indigenous women - and motifs sacred to tribes across California.
Street signs in parts of the Mission proclaim this area of the neighborhood "American Indian Cultural District, Ramaytush Ohlone Land," reflecting its cultural heritage and history.
