Neil Fox, the road safety campaigner, emphasizes that the current permit system is flawed as it allows too many trucks on the road during vulnerable hours, increasing risks for pedestrians and cyclists.
Despite measures taken since the opening of the Port Tunnel and the introduction of a management strategy, significant loopholes in permit regulations continue to expose Dublin’s streets to large trucks during peak hours.
Fox calls attention to the spike in load/unload permit issuance during October, stating that as daylight decreases, the likelihood of accidents involving heavy goods vehicles and pedestrians escalates.
He insists that the Dublin City Council needs to reassess their permit conditions as they currently neglect road safety for vulnerable users amidst rising numbers of trucks traversing restricted streets.
