A recent study highlights the secretive behaviors of American crocodiles in Florida, revealing how they travel considerable distances while generally avoiding human interactions. Despite being outnumbered by alligators, the population of about 2,000 crocodiles displays individual patterns of movement, with some preferring urban environments and others moving to wilderness areas. The research indicates that peaceful coexistence between these reptiles and humans is feasible, as crocodiles can navigate unnoticed through Florida's complex canal systems. The study aims to enhance understanding of their habitat and ecology in the region.
Crocodiles are a shy species that tend to avoid people. Our tracking shows that they are able to navigate through south Florida's extensive canal system.
Each crocodile we have tracked exhibits somewhat unique movement patterns. Some utilize a very small home range, while others travel far and wide.
