Jaylen Wells, an NBA player and Sonoma State University alum, is advocating for the preservation of the university's athletics programs, which face elimination due to a $24 million deficit. Wells expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he received at Sonoma State, stating it was pivotal for his career. The school's decision has sparked significant unrest among students, alumni, and staff, with many voicing their concerns at a recent Board of Trustees meeting. They emphasize the life-changing impact of athletics on students and criticize the abruptness of the university's announcement regarding the cuts.
"I think this was the best decision I made in my career was going to Sonoma State -- going to a place that believed in me, had a plan for me, and just allowed me to be me."
"Do not take this life changing opportunity away from young people," said Loganbauer.
"I'm deeply disturbed at the manner in which Sonoma State leadership came to their decision and then announced it via email," said Carrie Oliver.
"Obviously, I know a lot of players that are still playing there. Hearing their stories and how they feel. It sucks especially when you are playing a sport you love."
