On 10 July 2024, a female pygmy hippo was born at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand, captivating the world's imagination with her charming bloopers.
Photographs of the infant a slippery, chaotic and yes, bouncy beast shaped like a large potato, with a rolling eye, frequently open mouth and seemingly strong opinions brought wonder to a jaded world.
Pygmy hippos are rare, shy, and belong to the genus choeropsis, meaning they resemble pigs. They weigh only 4.5-6.2kg at birth.
Moo Deng, the winning name for the baby hippo, won with 20,000 votes, showcasing how even in challenging times, nature can bring joy.
