On his first day back in office, President Trump signed numerous executive orders and issued sweeping pardons linked to the January 6 Capitol attack. Nearly 1,500 individuals, including those convicted of violent assaults against police officers, received pardons, shocking even Trump's close advisors. Jacob Ware, a researcher on far-right extremism, remarked on the implications, stating it undermines the rule of law and signals that domestic political violence may be tolerated. This action raises significant concerns regarding U.S. counterterrorism and accountability for political violence.
It sets a terrible precedent for rule of law, for violence against institutions, violence against law enforcement. And it sends a message of permission.
We're in unprecedented territory. The pardons reverse much of the accountability that followed the January 6 attacks and raise significant concerns for U.S. counterterrorism.
