The trailer for 'The Legend of Ochi' sparked intense debate online, with accusations that AI was used in its creation. Director Isaiah Saxon responded, clarifying that the film employs traditional techniques like puppetry and animatronics, produced over six years. The film follows the story of a girl named Yuri, living in a Nordic village haunted by mythical creatures. While the movie may resemble established fantasy adventure tropes, it brings a wholesome and earnest narrative accompanied by stunning visuals, aiming to invite the audience into its enchanting world.
"Six years of handmade work: puppets, animatronics, matte paintings, and a bit of 3D animation," Saxon wrote in a since-deleted post on X. "No AI. There's the statement."
Legend of Ochi sometimes feels a little too calculated and formulaic, a byproduct of being part of a genre that has honed its formula to a fine point.
