The Irish Independent's View: Donald Trump's America First approach is giving Russia room to test the West
"A vacillating Joe Biden and a volatile Donald Trump have created room for Russia's Vladimir Putin to both push Europe as far as he wants, and also stretch the limits of Washington's credibility. In the past seven days Russian drones have been involved in incursions over Poland and Romania. Now Moscow has warned that Russia would "go after" any European state which sought to take its assets. Currently there is €350bn of sovereign Russian assets in a European securities depository."
"Also at the moment, 30,000 Russian and Belarus soldiers are holding military exercises on the Polish border. Russia's defence ministry said phase one would simulate repelling an attack against Russia and Belarus - known as the Union State. The second phase will focus on "restoring the territorial integrity of the Union State and crushing the enemy". Belarus also borders three Nato members - Poland, Lithuania and Latvia."
Russian military and political actions are pressuring European security and testing U.S. credibility. In the past week Russian drones crossed into Polish and Romanian airspace, and Moscow warned it would "go after" any European state seeking to seize €350bn of sovereign Russian assets held in a European securities depository. Thirty thousand Russian and Belarusian troops are conducting exercises on the Polish border, with phases simulating repelling an attack and restoring the Union State's territorial integrity. Belarus borders three NATO members. Inconsistent U.S. signals and reduced international engagement have emboldened Moscow and complicated European and NATO responses.
