Godzilla Minus One took a unique approach to the traditional giant lizard tale that created one of 2023's best films: A prequel to the Godzilla franchise set in the immediate aftermath of World War II, depicting Japan's struggles through Kōichi Shikishima's eyes, a man paralyzed by grief and trauma following the war and a Godzilla attack.
Godzilla Minus One notably won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards; before becoming a director, Yamazaki got his start working as a VFX supervisor, essential in keeping the first film's budget under $15 million while competing with $200 million budget blockbusters.
The new Toho movie will very likely not have any connection to Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros.' own kaiju projects, including Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
While there's no confirmation that the follow-up will be a direct sequel, Minus One ended on a tentative note, leaving the fate of a key character ambiguous while the threat of Godzilla still lurks beneath the waves.
