The C-Lion1 cable malfunctioned just after 02.00 GMT, suggesting it may have been severed by an outside force, according to Cinia’s CEO Ari-Jussi Knaapila.
Cinia, the Finnish state-controlled cyber-security and telecoms company, reported that an investigation is underway after their subsea fibre optic cable in the Baltic Sea stopped working.
The damage near Sweden’s Oland island could typically take between five and 15 days to repair as Cinia collaborates with authorities to look into the incident.
Last year’s damage to a subsea gas pipeline and telecom cables in the Baltic raised concerns, with Finnish police focusing on a Chinese container ship as a potential culprit.
