"It started off with us wanting something that focused on New York City tattoo culture," said Dave Herman, founder of Williamsburg's City Reliquary, which is now displaying a first-of-its-kind exhibit dedicated entirely to the statue's history in tattoos. This show highlights the deep-rooted connection between iconic symbols and personal expressions through body art, showcasing a unique cultural intersection.
A Lady Liberty tattoo recipient "could just as likely be somebody who's not from New York than somebody who is from New York, and that's the souvenir they want," the museum founder said. This illustrates how the Statue of Liberty transcends its geographical location, resonating with a diverse audience seeking connection through symbolic tattoos.
"Since we've done this show ... people are inspired to pick something and want to get their own souvenir," Myles added. This speaks to the growing trend of individuals turning to tattoos as mementos, connecting with iconic symbols like Lady Liberty in a personal way.
