This year, around 4,000 people saw their payments reduced, as the Department of Social Protection doubled fines for jobseekers who fail to engage with employment services.
Taoiseach Simon Harris stated it's "common sense" that penalties are imposed on those not engaging with jobseeker services, emphasizing fairness in support.
The previous reduction was €44, now doubled to €90, making clear that non-engagement with Department services has a substantial impact on payments.
The recent Social Welfare Bill reflects a commitment that while support exists, there's an expectation for individuals to actively participate in activation services.
