The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) confirmed that two sailors died after being struck by the boom on their respective yachts during the tumultuous Sydney to Hobart race.
David Jacobs, CYCA vice commodore, described the sailing incidents as a terrible tragedy, expressing that the loss deeply affected almost a thousand sailors on the water.
Despite the tragic events, the race continues as the fleet persists towards Constitution Dock, with early arrivals expected on Friday evening or Saturday morning.
The sailing conditions led to mass retirements, with 16 out of 104 yachts withdrawing from the race, and several suffering significant damages.
