"The world's media are focused on our resort. We thank them for seeking the compassion which the families of the injured and deceased so desperately need."
"Many of the victims were apprentices, high school students, and university students."
A New Year's Eve blaze at a bar in Crans-Montana killed 40 people and left 119 injured, many badly burned. Authorities have identified 24 of the deceased, including 11 minors and six foreign nationals, and are probing the venue owners for negligent manslaughter. Identified fatalities include Swiss citizens and nationals from Italy, France, Romania, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, among others. Many victims were apprentices, high school students, and university students. Hundreds of people walked in silence to a chapel of rest after a memorial service. Switzerland declared a national day of mourning for January 9 with church bells at 2:00 pm and a moment of silence.
