Swedish security services have launched an investigation into a damaged fiber optic cable connecting Sweden and Latvia, believed to have been sabotaged. The inquiry follows damage on Sunday, with Latvia alleging 'external influence' as likely responsible. The Maltese-flagged tanker 'Vezhen,' suspected of aggravated sabotage, was seized for investigation. Swedish authorities, including the intelligence agency Sapo, are involved in the case, collaborating with the coastguard and police. The vessel, tracked before the incident, had recently departed from Russia, raising concerns about its link to previous cable breakage incidents attributed to Russian interests.
Two Swedish patrol vessels were shown moored near to the Maltese-flagged, Bulgarian-owned tanker ‘Vezhen’ after the investigation into the damaged fiber optic cable under the Baltic Sea.
The ship was suspected of aggravated sabotage, as it had departed from Russia several days before the fiber optic cable damage occurred.
