Sweden moves landmark Kiruna Church to new site DW 08/19/2025
Briefly

A 113-year-old church, Kiruna Church, is being relocated about 5 kilometers to a new city center to avoid damage from an expanding underground iron ore mine. This historic event, dubbed 'The Great Church Walk,' involves transporting the 672-ton wooden church on remote-controlled flatbed trailers at a slow pace. The church relocation is part of a larger project to move the town of Kiruna, financed by mine operator LKAB at an estimated cost of 500 million kronor. An anticipated 10,000 people will attend the event, showcasing local culture and heritage.
"The operation is part of a decadeslong project to move much of the Arctic town of Kiruna after mining weakened the ground beneath its historic center."
"Mine operator LKAB is financing the relocation of the church estimated at 500 million kronor (45 million, $52 million), for which it also had to get the roads widened to accommodate the church."
